Northern United States' Largest Folk Art & Raku Festival!
BIG RAPIDS, Mi....The second annual Raku Festival, entitled "Clay, Art and Fire," will be held in Big Rapids, Michigan, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 4th, 5th and 6th, of 2010.
So, this is an early notice to make sure you save that date on your calendar!
Still in its initial planning stages, this event will bring together sixteen of the nation's best known folk artists and will guarantee attendees two days of live pottery demonstrations, lessons and raku firings in a carnival type atmosphere. And yes, there WILL be pottery for sale! And yes, you CAN get your hands into the clay and mold something of your own if you so desire.
An initial raku fest was held in Big Rapids this year under the auspices of Artworks, a local organization pledged to bring the arts back to West Central Michigan. It was such a huge success, that three attendees...Dan Norton of Pennsylvania, Angie Davis of Florida and Lorrie Wickman of Wisconsin...urged that this be turned into a national event.
Co chaired in Big Rapids by Jack Batdorff and Lori O'Neil, two collectors of folk art and face jugs, the idea of the event has blossomed into a full fledged nationwide happening.
Dan Norton, the guru of the modern face jugs will be there, as will be well known Florida artists Ron Dahline, Angie Davis and Mitchell Grafton. Steve Weslow of Maine, Greg Mathis of North Carolina, Freeman Loughridge of Oklahoma and Steven Dark of Alabama have also signed aboard, joined by Kevin "Turkey" Merck of Georgia, Yvette Lepley of Pennsylvania, Tammy Seggebruch of Illinois, Karl Kuehn of California, Lorrie Wickman of Wisconsin and Southern Folk Artist Dwayne Crocker of Georgia.
Dwayne Crocker will give a seminar on the history of Face Jugs...and of Southern Folk Art Pottery. Dwayne is a first generation potter who has mixed the humor and culture of his North Georgia heritage to create a very unique and specialized folk pottery....two of his brothers..Michael and Melvin...are also potters of their own accord.
